Serena Williams tops Forbes list of highest paid female athletes

Released by Forbes on Tuesday, August 6, Serena Williams has once again helmed over the business publication’s list of highest paid female athletes in the world.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion topped the list with $29.2 million earnings, put together from her winning prize money, which only makes up $4.2 million of the total amount, and endorsement deals. Second to Williams is Naomi Osaka, winner of the 2018 U.S. open, with a total earning of $24.3 million.

Angelique Kerper and her rival Wimbledon champion Simona Halep, place at No.3 and 4 respectively with $11.8 million for Kerper and $10.2 million for Simona. Sloane Stephens rounds up the top 5 charts with $9.6 million.

Surprisingly on the top 15 list this year is India’s badminton star PV Sindhu, who comes in at No.13 as the only athlete from the country to be named among the world’s highest-paid female athletes. Sindhu ties the spot with $5.5 million.

Forbes reports that the top 15 earned a cumulative $146 million, compared with $130 million last year. The earnings tally compiled by Forbes looks at prize money, salaries, bonuses, endorsements and appearance fees between June 2018 and 2019.

Serena is hopeful of topping the list another year, looking at her lined-up plans to come up with a clothing line, ‘S by Serena’ and designs to launch a jewelry and beauty line by the end of 2020. She also has built a business venture portfolio worth more than $10 million.
