Kofi Annan dies at age 80

Ghana and the entire African continent have lost yet another great hero. Former UN secretary, Kofi Annan has passed away after battling with a short illness.

News about his death was published by his family and foundation at the early hours of today in a tweet. “It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday, 18th August after a short illness,” the tweet read.

Kofi Annan was the seventh secretary general and served for two terms between 1997 and 2006. He was awarded the Nobel peace prize for his humanitarian work jointly with the UN as an organisation in 2001.

The sudden demise of Kofi has become a big blow not to only his family and friends, but world leaders as well as they have taken time to wish the late hero farewell.

Theresa May, the UK prime Minister, said on Twitter “Sad to hear of the death of Kofi Annan. A great leader and reformer of the UN. He made a huge contribution to making the world he has left a better place than the one he was born into. My thoughts and condolences are with his family.”

President of our dear nation, Ghana, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo has also shared his thoughts about his death and how he impacted the society at large in his 80-year life span.

The first tweet read, “The Government and people of Ghana, First Lady Rebecca and I are deeply saddened by the news of the death, in Berne, Switzerland, of one of our greatest compatriots, Mr. Kofi Annan.”

In another tweet by the president, he shared his take on his the late Annan’s contribution. “He brought considerable renown to our country by this position and through his conduct and comportment in the global arena. He was an ardent believer in the capacity of the Ghanaian to chart his or her own course onto the path of progress and prosperity.”
