Style influencer Ramona McDermott on closet cleaning during lockdown

Hey wonderful people! Hope everyone one is staying safe. This pandemic has taken a toll on us.  My condolences to everyone who has lost a soul or had to see a friend or family member battle this virus. It’s rather unfortunate, but this is the world we are living in now. So guys, let’s stay safe by staying home, washing our hands when you sneeze or cough and please don’t forget to do it the right away.

Fortunately for me, staying home happens to be my favourite thing to do of all time. Let’s just say I love my couch. What have you been doing with all your free time? I have managed to get a lot of things sorted out. My biggest accomplishment yet was my WARDROBE CLEARANCE!!! Guys!!!! Words can’t explain how light I feel from doing that. I now walk into my wardrobe and I can see everything laid out clearly. It’s honestly an amazing feeling. If you haven’t done so yet, don’t worry because it’s never too late. Here are some tips as to how to go about it.

BEFORE YOU START:

First of all, you need to know what you going to do with the items coming out. This step plays such a major role in what you are about to do. These are some options to consider

  1. Selling them as thrift;
  2. Gifting them to friends and family;
  3. Donating to charity.

WHAT TO GET RID OF

Often times, when people think of clearing out their closet, they assume they should only get rid of only all old items they no longer wear/want, either due to discolouration, a rip or have simply outgrown it. Well, no guys! One of the biggest reasons is also to let go of items you had bought that you will never wear yet it’s hard to let go. As a wardrobe consultant, I have come across a lot of clients who found it very hard to let go. Thus, I put in place an exercise that I practise with them.

  1. a) Have you ever worn it before? No
  2. b) When are you planning to wear it? Soon/ Don’t know
  3. c) Why did you buy it? It was on sale/ It was cute/Don’t know!

If any of these were your answer, please let it go!!!

SAYING FINAL GOODBYE

At this point, I can guarantee that you are feeling really bad, just watching all the money you have invested in all these items, only to now disappear. That’s if you are still stuck on the negative side and refusing to let go. There are many lessons to take from this exercise to apply to shopping in the future.

  • When you finally accept you are a shopaholic, slow down on your purchases, and shop with more caution henceforth.

There is also lot of positivity from this exercise, Girl!

  • You can finally see clearly into your closet space, you will find items that you believed were forever gone. Also you are finally letting go, and that’s a big accomplishment!

DONATE/GIFT/SELL

Do you now see why this was the first thing to know before clearing your closet? If you want to donate to charity, please do a thorough research before reaching out. There are so many charity homes that can do with these items.

Also, if you decide to gift them to family or friends, please do so. Don’t assume for anyone by thinking they might not want it. Give it to them unless they themselves decline for whatever the reasons may be.

And the last way of getting rid of them is with a yard sale/ thrifting. Best way to get this going is to have a few friends come together and collaborate. This way your customers have variety to look through regarding sizes and styles.
