How Tiwa Savage is helping seek justice for murdered Nigerian girls

Stronger than ever in advocacy, Tiwa Savage has taken the high road in using her fame as a tool to help seek justice for recently shot, raped and murdered Nigerian girls.

In Nigeria’s headline of stories last week, three girls under the age of 25 were met with brutality, which has resulted in the death of 16-year-old Tina Ezekwe, mistakenly shot by a police officer and 100-level Microbiology student of the University of Benin Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, who was raped in a church auditorium where she normally goes to study. Vera was later pronounced dead on Saturday after revealing the incident to authorities.

Another case was reported regarding a 12-year-old girl, raped by eleven men inside Limawa market.  Soon after all three cases broke out in the media landscape, several A-listers in the showbiz industry rallied on their various social media handles calling for justice.

Not slopping around with the collective propaganda, Tiwa launched the #WeAreTired hashtag on Twitter to stretch the message. “Let us keep speaking, keep talking, keep the conversation going to the right people in the right offices in the government who listen to us – those people who can make a difference and those who can make Nigeria a safer place for young boys, young girls and essentially for all of us. Until those people listen to us, let’s keep the conversation going,” she lauded in her posted video on Instagram.

The movement has so far registered 6,963 followers under its Instagram account with celebrity accounts such as Eku Edewor and Asogwa Alexandra A. (Alex Unusual of Big Brother Naija fame) joining.

In a spotted post by her on Thursday on the gram, Tiwa disclosed about a meeting she’s had with the Commissioner of police together with some unmentioned artist to delve deep into the matter and brainstorm on how to bring justice to the Nigerian people as soon as possible.

The update also came with a ‘sexual abuse’ poster urging anyone who has been sexually assaulted or with information that could help police investigation into matters of abuse. Phone lines to ring include Force Gender Unit: 08039397951, Complaint Response Unit: 08057000001, Public Complaint Bureau: 07056702065.

Aside the Nigeria crisis she is helping combat, the Billboard ‘Africa Now’ cover girl has also been adding voice to the Black Lives Matter movement started in the United States, where an African-American by name George Floyd was killed by a white police officer on Monday 25 May, 2020. She joined the #blackouttuesday crusade on Tuesday as part of the recording artists from around the world who paused to the show to disconnect from work and reconnect with their respective communities.

“The narrative has been that it doesn’t affect us because it happens so far way but I am my brothers/sisters keeper whether far or near,” Tiwa scripted beneath her Black Lives Matter poster.
