‘Game of Thrones’ creators leave HBO to Netflix

David Benioff and Dan Weiss, masterminds behind the award-winning television show ‘Game of Thrones’ have made a big move from HBO to Netflix, in closed deal worth $200 million.

Under the signed $200 million deal pact, the duo will create and develop new projects for the streaming platform. “We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos in a statement.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Beinoff and Weiss before closing the deal with Netflix, were on high demand by Disney and Amazon, but later settled with Netflix after extensive discussions. The million-dollar money attached to the deal, surpasses the $150 million pact ‘Westworld’ creators Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan received from Amazon in April this year.

In joint statement released by the creative minds, they disclosed, “We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months, we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stubber. We remember the same shots from the same ’80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”

Although not attached to Disney on contract terms at the moment, the ‘Game of Thrones’ creators are currently working on a ‘Star Wars’ trilogy for the studio’s owned Lucasfilm dated to have its first pic hit theaters on December 16, 2022, followed by the second and third in December 2024 and December 2026.

Benioff and Weiss are repped by Hansen Jacobson.
