2021 Academy Awards: Full list of nominees

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its list of nominees for the 2021 Oscars.

Leading the field is David Fincher’s ‘Mank’, with 10 total nominations including best picture and best director. Fincher races in the best director category alongside Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round) and Lee Isaac Chung (Minari).

Zhao and Fennell’s nominations place them as the sixth and seventh women in Oscar history to be mentioned in the best director category. The last woman appearance was in 2018, when Greta Gerwig competed with ‘Lady Bird’.

Also, Zhao, together with Chung, make history as the first two Asian directors to be nominated within the same category in a single year. Zhao again becomes the first woman ever to receive four nominations in a single year (best picture, film editing and adapted screenplay).

In the acting category, Riz Ahmed, nominated for best actor in a lead role for ‘Sound of Metal, makes history as the first Muslim actor to receive such nod. He competes against past Oscar winners Gary Oldman (Mank), Anthony Hopkins (The Father), first timer, Steven Yeun (Minari) and Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom).

Yeun and Boseman’s nominations also record a first-time fete for both actors. Yeun becomes the first Asian American ever to be nominated in the category, while Boseman sadly becomes the first actor of colour to attain such fete posthumously.

For best actress in a lead role, ‘Promising Young Woman’s’ Carey Mulligan is in company with two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand (Nomadland), one time Oscar winner Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), who now doubles as the most nominated black actress in Oscar history and newly minted nominees Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) and Andra Day (The United State vs. Billie Holiday).

Meanwhile, Glenn Close is back in the Oscar race for the 8th time after a long run since 1982. The powerhouse competes against Amanda Seyfried (Mank), Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Olivia Colman (The Father) and Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari).

Hollywood couple Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas announced the nominees in a remote feed in London. The main night is expected to take place on April 25, 2021 from two separate locations, L.A.’s Union Station and the Dolby Theatre. Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh are producing the telecast.
